A thought on what we publish and what we don't

Actually, it's a joke with a thought-provoking punchline. Those who will be offended by a little profanity should not click on this link to Crooked Timber, one of my favorite non-genealogy blogs.

Good story, Harold. I know a physicist who told me he was working on some theoretical problem, and if it worked out the way it was supposed to, he'd publish it. I asked what about if it didn't work out. He said they don't publish that stuff. I said it's possible he's the zillionth person to try this and that all his predecessors may have gotten the nonresult, and that a zillion minus one of his predecessors could have saved themselves the time if the first one had published, and then he'd be the zillionth. He said, yep. (Whole convo paraphrased, but that was the gist.)
